BBC Leadership Resignations Amid Trump Speech Edit Controversy
On November 9, 2025, BBC Director-General Tim Davie and CEO of News Deborah Turness resigned following intense criticism over the broadcaster’s alleged editing of a 2021 speech by U.S. President Donald Trump.
The controversy centered on a Panorama documentary that allegedly edited Trump’s January 6 speech, omitting a call for peaceful protest and implying direct incitement of violence at the Capitol. A leaked internal memo by adviser Michael Prescott highlighted “serious and systemic” bias in BBC coverage, including on transgender issues, Gaza, and anti-Israel slant in its Arabic service.
Davie stated, “There have been some mistakes made and as director-general I have to take ultimate responsibility.” Turness added, “The controversy… has reached a stage where it is causing damage to the BBC—an institution that I love. As the CEO… the buck stops with me.”
The resignations, described by insiders as feeling like a “coup” fueled by right-wing media, come amid White House attacks labeling the BBC “fake news” and “propaganda.”
